Project Title:
Empowering Unemployed Youth in Uganda Through Welding and Vocational Skills Training and Job Placement
1. Background and Problem Statement
Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, with over 70% of the population under the age of 30. Despite this demographic advantage, youth unemployment and underemployment remain major challenges.
Many young people:
Lack practical, marketable skills
Drop out of school due to poverty
Cannot afford formal vocational training
Complete training but fail to secure employment
Lack tools and capital to start small enterprises
This has resulted in rising poverty, crime, dependency, and frustration among youth, especially in low-income urban and rural communities.
There is a critical need for affordable, practical, and employment-linked vocational training programs that directly connect youth to income opportunities.
2. Project Goal
To reduce youth unemployment and improve economic self-reliance among vulnerable young people in Uganda through practical welding and vocational skills training linked to job placement and entrepreneurship support.
3. Specific Objectives
1. To provide market-driven welding and vocational skills training to 100 unemployed youth within 12 months.
2. To equip trainees with entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills.
3. To facilitate job placement or self-employment for at least 70% of trained youth.
4. To establish partnerships with local companies and workshops for apprenticeship and employment opportunities.
4. Target Beneficiaries
Unemployed youth aged 18–35
School dropouts
Youth from low-income households
Vulnerable young women and men
Youth without formal vocational certification
Priority will be given to youth from disadvantaged communities.
5. Key Activities
1. Community Mobilization & Selection
Outreach in target communities
Transparent selection of beneficiaries
2. Skills Training (3–6 Months)
Welding and metal fabrication
Construction basics
Electrical installation (basic level)
Workplace safety and professionalism
Training will be 80% practical and competency-based.
3. Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy Training
Business planning
Savings and record keeping
Customer service
Cooperative/group enterprise models
4. Job Placement & Linkages
Partnerships with construction firms
Apprenticeship placements
Industry exposure visits
Employer networking meetings
5. Startup Support
Toolkits for best-performing graduates
Group tool-sharing initiatives
Business mentorship
6. Expected Results
100 youth trained in marketable vocational skills
At least 70 youth employed or self-employed within 6 months of graduation
Increased income levels among beneficiaries
Reduced vulnerability and social risks among participating youth
Strengthened local workforce for construction and fabrication sectors
7. Sustainability Strategy
The project will adopt a social enterprise approach:
Income generation through production and sale of fabricated products (gates, doors, metal structures).
Partnerships with private sector companies for long-term employment pathways.
Gradual introduction of subsidized training fees for those who can afford.
Alumni network to mentor new trainees.
This blended model will reduce long-term donor dependency.
8. Monitoring and Evaluation
Baseline data collected at enrollment
Monthly training progress assessments
Attendance and skills competency tracking
Employment tracking at 3 and 6 months post-training
Final evaluation report documenting outcomes and lessons learned
