Every meaningful change begins with someone who cares enough to take the first step. For Kangave Youth Development Group (KYDG), that step came in 2019, when a few friends shared a common concern about the challenges facing young people in their community.
They believed that young people deserved more than sympathy. They needed support, encouragement and opportunities to build better futures. That shared belief became the foundation of KYDG.
Today, the organisation continues to pursue that vision in Luwero District, Uganda, working to empower young people through education, skills development, digital literacy, leadership and positive values.
How It All Started
When KYDG began, its founders were young people who understood the importance of standing together. They saw that some of their peers were struggling with education and basic needs, and they wanted to find practical ways to help.
Rather than waiting for someone else to act, they started with what they had: a willingness to support one another, share ideas and make a difference where they could.
The early days were not about having a large organisation or extensive resources. They were about compassion, commitment and the belief that even small acts of support can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
That simple beginning laid the foundation for a bigger purpose: creating a community where young people can support one another, develop their abilities and work towards a better future.
Growing Together
What began as a small initiative gradually grew as more young people became part of the journey. From an initial group of nine, KYDG’s reach has grown to 115 young people.
This growth represents more than an increase in numbers. It reflects a growing commitment to youth development and the value of working together towards a shared goal. The organisation’s current reach includes 89 girls and 26 boys, demonstrating the importance of creating opportunities for young people, particularly girls, to learn, grow and participate in community life.
As more young people become involved, KYDG continues to build a community based on shared responsibility, encouragement and mutual support. Every young person brings different experiences, ideas and abilities, and these differences can become a strength when people work together.
The Power of Teamwork
At KYDG, teamwork is central to the way we work. Meaningful change does not happen through the efforts of one person alone. It requires people who are willing to contribute, learn from one another and take responsibility for a common purpose.
Our approach encourages members to participate, share knowledge, support their peers and take part in community activities. We also value transparency and accountability because trust is essential to building a strong and lasting organisation.
By working together, young people can discover their potential, develop confidence and become more active in addressing the challenges affecting their communities.
Creating Opportunities for Young People
KYDG believes that every young person should have an opportunity to learn, develop useful skills and contribute meaningfully to society.
Education provides a foundation for personal growth. Practical skills can help young people prepare for work and self-reliance. Digital literacy opens access to information and learning opportunities, while leadership development helps young people become responsible decision-makers and positive influences in their communities.
These areas guide KYDG’s work as it seeks to support young people in developing the knowledge, values and abilities they need to face life’s challenges.
Our commitment goes beyond helping young people today. We want to encourage them to use what they learn to support others, participate in community development and become part of the positive change they wish to see.
Looking to the Future
The journey of KYDG is still unfolding. Although the organisation has grown from its early beginnings, its purpose remains rooted in the same belief that inspired its founders: young people deserve opportunities to realise their potential.
As KYDG moves forward, it seeks to strengthen its work, build meaningful partnerships and reach more young people. Achieving this vision requires the continued commitment of members, families, community leaders, supporters and partners who believe in youth development.
There is still work to do, but the journey so far shows what can happen when people come together around a shared purpose.
